HockeyStat
Demo Version Installation Instructions

Downloading

1) Create a new directory (folder) on your hard drive called "HsTemp" (or any name you like really, just not "HStat" or "HSDemo").

2) Start the download of the file via the line on the demo page (previous page) and when it prompts you where you want the file to be placed, have it placed in the folder you created.

3) Once the download is complete, continue on with the installation instructions below.

Installing

This file is a self-extracting Zip file, to unpack it, click on "Start" and then "Run" from the task bar, then click on "Browse" and find the file "HSDemo.exe" in the folder you created. Highlight the file by clicking on it once and then click on "Open". This will return you to the previous window where you should click on "Ok" next. A "Dos" window will come up and show the progress of the unpacking process. Once it appears to be finished, the title on the window will say "Finished - hsdemo" and you can close the Window and go on to the next step.

Once extracted, choose "Start" and then "Run" again from the task bar, then "Browse" and this time find the same folder and highlight the file called "Setup.exe". Choose "Open" and then "Ok" to run the setup program.

An installation instructions window will appear. Choose Install to continue

Click on OK to accept the default drive and directory where HockeyStat will be installed (or change these first if for some reason you need to do so - it is recommended, though, that you accept the options presented)

The installation procedure will prompt you to insert additional disks; once all the disks have been installed, a new group will be added to Program Manager called HockeyStat and you will be notified that "Installation is complete" and a window containing HockeyStat icons will appear.

Starting HockeyStat

To start HockeyStat, double-click on the HockeyStat icon in the "HockeyStat" group.

HockeyStat will recognise that you have just installed (or reinstalled) the program and you will be prompted that the final phase of the installation is about to proceed. Unless you are running on a network, just press "Proceed" to continue.

The installation procedure will then continue to prepare your system for use. After a few moments, you will be presented with a screen to choose some installation options (e.g. language to be used, preferred method of displaying dates etc.). Make any necessary changes and then click on OK to proceed. The installation program will proceed to prepare your system for use.

Once the installation procedure is complete, you will be presented with the HockeyStat opening screen and menu.

HockeyStat
Using The Demo Version

The quickest way to see what HockeyStat can do for your league is to view the information that has been entered for our "demo" league.

Viewing Team Information

To do this, choose Database from the top menu and then choose Teams from the list. The Teams Screen will appear and the details for the first team in the league will appear.

Some basic information for the team is presented (e.g. team name, city name etc.) along with a list showing some Team Statistics. Note that HockeyStat generates many more statistics than the ones shown here (youll see more of them when you get to the "Reports" section) - the statistics shown are a "quick view" of some of the most commonly calculated statistics.

To show the next team in the list press Next or press the Browse button to show a listing of all the teams in the league. If you choose the Browse button, to show the details for a particular team, double click on the team you want to view and the details screen will reappear (or arrow down to the team to highlight it and press <Enter> if you prefer).

To show the Roster for a team, click on the Roster tab at the top of the teams screen and another page of details will appear showing the team roster. When finished, click on the Team tab to take you back to the first page and then click on the Close button to close the Teams screen.

Viewing Player Information

Choose Database from the top menu and then Players from the list.

Details for the first player in the league will appear on the Players screen. The first page shows basic details for the player (name, position, birthdate etc.) and some summary player statistics.

Click Next twice to go to a player who has a bit more statistics for this season. To see even more of this players statistics at a glance, click on the More Stats button and you will see a number of other stats that HockeyStat has calcuated for this player.

To see some of the other information that HockeyStat allows you to keep for each player, click on the Highlights tab at the top of the screen. HockeyStat keeps statistics for goalies, Career Highlights (for press purposes perhaps) and Discipline Records.

Click on the Address tab for the Players screen and you will see a page to allow you to enter both seasonal and/or permanent home addresses for this player along with an area to enter important biographical information (which can often be used for publicity purposes).

To close this screen, go back to the first page by clicking on the Player tab and choose the Closebutton.

Printing A Report

HockeyStat is able to print out literally dozens of reports for both team and player statistics. To print one of these reports, choose Report from the top menu and then click again on Report. The Report Manager screen will appear listing all of the reports available in HockeyStat.

As a demonstration, use the down arrow to move the highlight to the "Player70" report ("Individual Scoring Leaders"). Then press the Run button to print the report (if you do not have a printer attached to your computer, press the Preview button instead and the report will come up on the screen).

You will need to wait for a few seconds as HockeyStat calculates some statistics on all of the 400 or so players in the demo players database and then it selects out the Top 10 Scorers.

If you are printing the report, press OK when the Print screen comes up. If you are previewing the report, you will be presented with the full page of the report once it is calculated. To zoom in on the details of the report (usually it is too hard to see the details since it is displaying a full page), move the cursor (which looks like a magnifying glass) overtop of the details in the report and click once. The report will be zoomed in size and should be easier to see. To move around the report, click on the left and right arrows on the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen to move left or right across the report or use the up and down arrows at the right of the screen to move up and down through the report.

When done previewing the report, click on Ok. At this point you will have the option to print the report or you can just click on Close and you will be returned to the Report Manager screen where you can run or preview another report. When you are finished viewing reports, click on the Exit button.

Viewing Game Details

As with the other databases, choose Database from the top menu and then Games from the list presented.

The Games screen will come up which will show all the details for a game played - the score, who played, which goalies dressed for the game, the goals and the penalties.

To see a quick summary of each of these items, click on the down arrow beside the appropriate list. For example, to see all of the skaters for the Home team, click on the down arrow beside the Home Skaters list. A "mini-list" of names will appear that you can scroll through that gives you a quick view of the skaters for that game.

Do the same for the Goals list for the Home team and you will see a summary of the goals (the scorer and period and time for the goal is show in the "Quick List"). To see all the details for all of the goals, click on the Details button to the right of the list and the Goals Detail screen will appear.

Continue to check out all of the details for the game by clicking on each of the Detail buttons for the skaters, goalies, penalties and plus/minus stats. When finished, click on the Close button to exit the Games screen.

Entering A "Demo" Game

In order to give you an idea of how easy it is to enter game details into HockeyStat, we have included a sample game sheet which you can use to enter game details for one of the games in the "Demo League" game schedule.

To enter a game, go back into the Games database and find the game between on the Williamsford Wolves and the Blackwater Bears on Oct 8/96. To find this game (which is one of the last games in the schedule for the Demo league), click on the Browse button and use the scroll bar on the right to find the game or alternately you can use PgDn to move down through the games one page at a time. You could also press Search on the Games screen and enter the game date to go to the first game played on that date in the schedule.

Once you have found the appropriate game, click on the Edit button at the bottom of the screen (the Add button adds a game to the schedule, the Edit button changes various details about the game).

A screen will appear that will give you some options for this game. To enter a games data, click on the Enter button (to start "Entering Stats" for this game) and after a moment, the screen will change so that you can start entering details.

Entering The Score: enter the score for the Home team and Away team. Leave the periods played at 3. Suggestion: enter the score as 1 for the Home Team and 2 for the away - then below when you enter the goals, make sure you enter 1 goal for the Home side and 2 goals for the Away side.

Entering Skaters: click on the Details button to the left of the Home Skaters list (the list will currently show "(none)" since we have not yet entered any skaters). The Change Skaters screen will appear. For each player who skated in this game, highlight the players name in the list on the left (the "Players This Team" list) and then press the Add >> in the centre of the screen. This will move them onto the "Skaters This Game" list.

(If you prefer to use the keyboard, you can also add players to the Skaters This Game list by moving to the player with the arrow keys and pressing <Enter> and the player will be copied over. Also, if you are quick with the mouse, a double-click on the player will also put them on the Skaters list.)

Once you have added all the skaters for this game, click on the Save button to save this information and return to the overall games screen. Now enter the skaters for the Away team in like manner.

Entering Goalies: click on the Details button beside the Home Goalies list. For each goalie who dressed for this game, highlight them in the Goalies This Team list and press Add >>. Then for the goalie who started the game, highlight them in the Goalies Dressed list and click on the Set Starting button. An asterisk will appear beside their name to indicate that they were the starting goalie for this game.

When finished, press the Save button at the bottom of the screen.

Entering Goals: click on the details button. To enter a goal, click on the Add button and the cursor will be positioned in the Period field. Type in the period, then the time (in the format "04:14" - note: times are entered as the actual game time, counting up from 00:00, not clock time).

Then enter the jersey number of the player who scored the goal and press <Tab> (or <Enter>) and then the jersey numbers of the assisters for the game. As you enter these, their names will show up to the right of the jersey number to allow you to double-check that you have entered the correct player.

After entering the 2nd assist, the cursor will be positioned on the "Goal Type" list. If the goal is a "Regular Goal" (as opposed to a Power Play goal), just press <Tab> and the cursor will move to the next field. If the goal happens to be a power play goal, press the letter P and the Goal Type will automatically switch to "Power Play" (or you can click on the down arrow to the right of the Goal Type list and choose an option from the list). Once the change has been made, press <Tab> to move to the "Empty Net Goal" field. Rarely does this need to be changed so just press <Tab> again and the cursor will move to the Done button.

If everything is corrrect, click on the Done botton and the details for this goal will be saved. You will then notice that the Goals list at the top of the screen will now include the basic details for the goal entered. Once you have entered all of the goals for the Home team, press the Save to save what you have entered and return to the main games screen.

Entering Penalties: open up the penalties entry screen by clicking on the Home penalties Details button. Penalties are entered much like goals. Click on the Add button to enter the first penalty. Fill in the period, the jersey number for the player but skip over the "Served By" field (by pressing <Tab>) unless the penalty was served by another player.

Enter the code for the penalty in the "Offense" field. If you are not sure of the code, enter a question mark (?) in the field, press <Enter> and then press F10 and a list of the available codes will show up. After you have entered the code, press <Tab> to move to the next field and the "Minutes" for the penalty will automatically be filled in. Unless for some reason you need to change the minutes, just press <Tab> again to move to the "Off Time" field.

Enter the "Off Time" (in "12:34" format) and press <Tab>. The cursor will move to the "Start Time" field and it will be automatically filled in with the same time. The only time you need to change this field is if the penalty is a delayed penalty so usually you would just press <Tab> to move to the next field. Likewise, the "On Time" will be filled in automatically.

Press <Tab> once more and the "PP Opportunity" (Power Play) opportunity field will be highlighted. If this penalty gave the other team a PP opportunity, click on this field to indicate this. Then click on the Done button to save the details of this penalty.

Once you have entered all the penalties, click on the Save button at the bottom of the screen to save all the penalties for the Home team.

Entering Plus/Minus: for this game, no plus/minus stats were recorded so they cannot be entered.

Saving The Entire Game: to save the entire game once you have entered the details for both the Home and Away teams, click on the Save button at the top right of the Games screen. You will need to wait just a few moments as HockeyStat saves all the skaters, goalies, goals etc. to your hard drive and calculates some statistics. Once it is done, the screeen will be ready to go onto the next game to enter, or in this case, just press Close to close the Games screen.

Optionally, if you want to print out the details of what you have entered, click on the Print Game Details button, choose the reports you want to print and press Print. HockeyStat will then assemble all the required reports and print them for you. As well, you could close the Games screen and go to the Reports Manager screen to see how the game entered has affected the overall stats printed.

Viewing Other Information

HockeyStat also keeps information on your league, divisions within your league and season-by-season details. Feel free to view the information on each of these which is under the Databaseoption on the top menu.
